Burges Salmon started a volunteer day with us in March 2010. Since then we have accommodated one day each month for 4 people. The CSR representative Catherine said “We have been overwhelmed with people wanting to volunteer with FareShare South West”

We have had great feedback from the volunteers who have spent a day with us. Most volunteers want to come and work alongside our existing volunteers with our operations. They go with the van to collect 4 pallets from a distribution site and then unpack this food into portions for our projects; they then pick the food for our deliveries that day and finally go out on the van to deliver the food to the projects. So they see the whole process from saving the food from landfill to delivering this food to the hungry.

A special thanks to Sukhi Kaur and Helen Griffin for taking a days holiday from work to come and volunteer for us for an extra day.

16 employees have volunteered with us since March 2010. They have helped collect 3.4 tonnes of food and deliver 3.7 tonnes of food to our community members. This is equivalent to 16,905 meals for the most vulnerable people in our city and a CO2 saving of 32 tonnes to the environment.

Here are a few quotes from the volunteers:

“I can’t believe how much you can achieve in one day – amazing contribution to so many people”

“Thank you for making us feel so welcome”

“A very worthwhile & greatly important charity. A fantastic team of volunteers. Well done to all”

We have also had help with marketing and printing from Burges Salmon and we value the relationship we have with them and look forward to a continued success.

Last night, FareShare won the award as ‘Britain’s Most Admired Charity’ at the Third Sector Awards ceremony hosted by Barclays in Docklands.

FareShare was one of five nominees, alongside RNIB, RNLI, Help for Heroes and The Woodland Trust. The nominees were chosen by Third Sector and a panel of advisers, and the awards were voted for by CEO’s of charities and social businesses working in the third sector.

Tony Lowe, FareShare CEO says:

“To be shortlisted against such high profile and well respected charities was amazing enough, so to win this is a huge honour for the charity.

Food waste and food poverty are key challenges for the UK in 2010. Winning this prestigious award will help FareShare bring these important issues to wider public attention while at the same time making many organisations in the third sector aware of how FareShare can help them improve their services to vulnerable people across the UK.”

FareShare runs 12 depots across the country. One of these is FareShare South West, based in Bristol. Operating since late 2007 has redistributed food to 62 Community Members. This food has contributed towards 1000,000 meals for vulnerable people in and around Bristol.

Andrew Street, FareShare South West Chairman says:

“This is an amazing accolade for the work of FareShare, both on a national basis and also here in the South West. To be selected to win this prestigious award from a shortlist of high profile and well respected charities is a huge honour.

We are committed to further development of our operations here in the South West, helping to address the major issues of food waste and food poverty and bringing much needed support to vulnerable people across the region, and Bristol in particular.”

Jacqui Reeves, FareShare project manager says:

“We are very happy to be recognised for the work we do with such a prestigious award. This is for all our committed volunteers and partners. This award has given us all a huge boost – knowing we are going in the right direction.”

Last year, the food redistributed by the charity contributed towards 7.4 million meals for vulnerable people. The charity runs 12 operations across the country and every day 29,000 people benefit from the FareShare service.

To support FareShare South West’s long term sustainability and to ensure that we will be able to continue to provide our members with good quantities of quality food, we introduced a membership fee scheme last year. This fee will help to cover some of the costs necessary to administer the service and is not a charge for the food itself.

We would like to ascertain the level of projects ability to pay this membership fee . Could you please take a few moments to complete the following questionnaire Projects serving food Bristol – questionnaire blank
and email it back to: info@faresharesouthwest.org.uk
Dawn was obviously very shocked to see the amount of food that would otherwise be landfilled. Dawn said “FareShare really is a brilliant project. It was an eye-opener, and a real worry, to see how much food is simply wasted and destined for land-fill rather than people’s plates. Thankfully, FareShare are doing something about this. Not only do they distribute food to people who need it, they are also able to educate us all about the problem of wasting perfectly good food. They offer a number of excellent volunteering opportunities to people who have found it difficult to find work, and I wish them every success in the future”

Dawn Primorolo MP, David the gardener, Pete Wright-Operations Manager and Jacqui Reeves-Project Manager

The visit coincided with a fantastic donation of fresh fruit and veg from
Old Curch Farm part of Rolls Royce. It is a unique building of great historical importance. The working garden, totally organic in its methods, provides 8o% of the vegetables that the chef use for the meals they prepare at the house however this time of year there is a glut of fruit and vegetables. Old Church Farm is donating through the months of May to October. The fruit and vegetables range from Strawberries, plums, apples, potatoes, carrots and courgettes. Jacqui, Project Manager with FareShare said “We are always really excited by the prospect of receiving fresh fruit and vegetables for our Community Members. The fact that this has come from a local source makes that more appealing and fits very well within FareShare’s ethos, Thank you Rolls Royce”
