FareShare South West relies on the generous support of volunteers to help run and manage the project. It provides valuable training opportunities for volunteers taking up these posts, with roles including drivers, drivers’ assistants, shift co-ordinators, sorters and office administration.
What do FareShare volunteers do?
- Drivers collect and deliver donated food to Community Food Network Members. They carry out basic checks on the FareShare van. They also help to plan routes and deliveries.
- Drivers’ assistants direct drivers safely to delivery and collection points and oversee loading and unloading. They are also responsible for ensuring that paperwork is correctly completed at each stop.
- Shift Co-ordinators supervise volunteers and co-ordinate the operational aspects of their shift, leading and supporting other volunteers.
- Sorters ensure that food is of an acceptable quality for redistribution. The food is also counted and categorised.
- Office volunteers assist with administrative tasks in the FareShare office. These include answering telephones and dealing with general enquiries, data entry for collections and deliveries, and organising mail outs.
